Can Headphones Damage Your Brain? Are They Really Bad For Your Health?


Headphones or Earphones are a pair of small loudspeakers that are designed to be worn on or around the head over a user's ears. Headphones actually convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound in the user's ear. They are basically designed for a single user to listen to an audio source privately. It doesn’t give sound into the open air for anyone nearby to hear. Earphones are also known as ear speakers, headphones or earphones.


Now the question is that this advanced technological device is really bad for your health, can headphones damage your brain? Yes there are many disadvantages whatever earphones you choose. For instance, hearing problem. It effects your hearing ability after sometimes or after a certain age. Now we will discuss some disadvantages of using earphones as its misuse or overuse can get really bad for your health.

EFFECTS ON BRAIN:

The earphones/headphones produce the electromagnetic waves which can cause adverse effects to your brain specially if they are used on daily basis. A minor infection in the inner ear can directly affect the brain and can lead to serious health issues. 
People also use earphones while they sleep. Sleeping is an integral part of our daily lives. While we sleep, the brain rests so that it can operate at its full potential the next day but, your habit of keeping the earphones plugged in at night is disrupting this so the subconscious state of your mind stays awake partially and eventually damages your brain.

PAIN IN EARS:

Lots of people who use ear phones or headphones usually suffer from pain in ears. They also experience hearing some strange sound buzzing inside ears or a sharp pain in a certain point of ear. The most common cause of this pain is the use of earphones for long hours. Another major cause is listening loud music.

EAR INFECTIONS:

Sharing of earphones with each other should be discouraged. Bacteria from ears of different people can easily travel through your headphones such that they can suffer from certain ear infections. If you keep them continuously plugged in, they are blocking the flow of air into the ears, which makes it more prone to harmful bacteria, thus damaging your eardrums as well.

HEARING IMPAIRMENT:

Listening to loud music is one of the major reasons for hearing loss. People can get temporary loss of hearing by listening to music at volumes exceeding 90 decibels. This range of sound can eventually cause permanent hearing impairment.
However, if used efficiently, you can also gain some benefits. Instead of plugging in your earphones the whole night listening to rock music, listen to classical songs and soothing music for around half an hour to an hour which helps to increase your concentration and make the mind more peaceful.

TIPS

  • Always buy high quality headphones/ear phones
  • Don't use stylish small ear phones as they can go straight in to your ear canal, so go for bigger ones
  • Don't Share your headphones/ear phones
  • Change the rubber/sponge cover once in a month
  • Don't listen to loud music, maintain music volume between 40 to 60%
  • Don't use them on daily basis and give your ears some rest
  • Dont use them when travelling
